Biography:Education: Westminster School; Christ Church, University of Oxford (Chairman of the Oxford University Labour Club, 1954; President of the Oxford Union, 1955) Career: Journalist for more than forty years. Originally planned a career as a barrister, but after National Service obligations joined Reynolds News as political correspondent, then the Manchester Guardian, 1959; New Statesman, 1961/1964; Sunday Times, as Whitehall correspondent, 1965; Observer, chief Washington correspondent, 1966-69, and a political column 1971/72; New Statesman, Deputy Editor, 1970/72 and Editor, 1972/78; Edited The Listener, 1979/81; Deputy Editor of The Observer, 1981/88; Reporter on BBC's Newsnight and Panorama programmes, 1989/92; Times Obituaries editor, 1993-99, Chief Political Book Reviewer, 1990/2004, wrote opinion columns until September 2005 Current position/role:
